When Is an Old Calculator Worth Repairing?

An old calculator arriving at a repair counter presents a decision before it presents a screwdriver. Lubricant placed on electrical contacts can attract dust or alter resistance. A repairer tests cleaning materials in a controlled way, uses the minimum necessary intervention, and photographs routing before disassembly.

Repair Value Is More than Resale Price

A common calculator may cost more to repair than to replace, yet repair can preserve a school memory, a worker's tool, an early design, or a complete teaching collection. The owner should receive an estimate that separates diagnosis, labour, parts, uncertainty, and return shipping. A declared ceiling prevents sentimental pressure from becoming an open-ended bill.

Donor machines raise ethical choices. Sacrificing one complete rare model to save another may reduce the surviving record. Parts harvesting should document donor identity, component source, compatibility, and remaining material. Modern substitutes can keep a device usable, but non-original parts and irreversible circuit changes must be disclosed rather than hidden as authenticity.

Programmable and organiser calculators may retain formulas, contacts, financial figures, or personal notes. Repairers need permission before reading memory, a policy for backup and erasure, and secure handling of returned or discarded boards. Even a device that appears dead can contain recoverable data. Owners should be told when diagnosis may reset memory.
